Are you a good candidate for liposuction?
Liposuction is a type of plastic surgery in which excess body fat is broken down and then removed from the body. Some of the most common areas an individual might opt to have fat removed from include the abdomen, buttocks, and thighs. However, you can have excess fat removed from just about anywhere on the body, including the neck, back, and even the calves.
What to expect
Liposuction is comprised of two main steps. First, a combination of painkiller and a vasoconstrictor is injected into the area. The purpose of the vasoconstrictor is to shrink the blood vessels to help decrease the amount of bruising. Next, a cannula, which is basically a hollow instrument, is inserted under the skin, a high-powered vacuum is attached to the cannula, and the surgeon slowly removes the unwanted fat cells.
Following surgery, you will be given painkillers and required to wear a compression garment, the purpose of which is to apply consistent pressure on the skin to help it adjust to the now smaller area. You will need to wear the compression garment for two weeks straight. Following this initial phase, you will then wear the garment, depending on your doctor’s recommendations, for increasingly shorter periods of time.
Things to consider
In terms of risks, there can be some scarring or temporary bruising. Additionally, you may experience numbness that typically resolves within six to eight weeks. In terms of smoothness, dents in the skin–lumpiness–might occur if too much fat is removed. Finally, as with any surgery, there is a risk of infection.
The best candidates
It is important to understand that liposuction is not recommended for an individual who is slightly overweight and wanting a bit of help to lose a few extra pounds. The best candidate for this cosmetic surgery is an individual of a healthy body weight but someone wanting to eliminate excess body fat from a specific area of his or her body.
