Breast Augmentation Surgery in Miami

Breast augmentation is a popular plastic surgery operation designed to both increase the size of the breasts and also improve the shape.

What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a popular plastic surgery operation designed to both increase the size of the breasts and also improve the shape.

It’s performed under general anesthetic, and the majority of patients go home on the same day. In the operation, a little incision is made underneath the breast in the natural breast fold.

The implant is inserted either above the muscle or just below the muscle. The incisions are closed with dissolving absorbable sutures, and a simple tape is applied to the incision.

There are a big variety in size and shape of breast implants. Your goals for surgery like what sort of look you are hoping for and also your natural anatomy are matched with the type of breast implant .

At the end, a support bra is used to support the breasts, but there are no other dressings and no drains. The patients often go home on the day of surgery, and it is recommended that they take a week off work.

What are some of the risks of Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a routine procedure, and the vast majority of patients come through without any problems whatsoever.

However, there are some complications you need to be aware of, and these include general things such as infection or bleeding. These are very rare in breast augmentation surgery occurring in about 1 in a hundred patients, but they may be a reason why you have to return to the clinic.

There are complications relating to the implant. The implants we use nowadays are very durable and robust, but in a minority of cases, they may rupture or get scar tissue formation around them that deforms the breast.

That is termed capsular contracture and is one of the more common reasons why patients undergo a revision.

Some things are common to all patients like having some degree of nipple numbness of the skin around the breast. That usually improves over six weeks to six months.

There will also be swelling, and this takes several weeks and months to settle down. Also, breast implants often sit quite high early on, and they take some time to settle down into their natural position.

This process is called fluff and drop. In a minority of patients, bleeding after the procedure may result in swelling in the breast pocket around the implant and require a further operation to remove the blood clot.

How long does Breast Augmentation take to recover?

About 15% of patients who have breast augmentation surgery will have a revision within 10 to 15 years.

The scar is minimal, around 4cm or so, and it is placed directly in the fold underneath the breast. After some time the scar fades, and because of its location becomes very inconspicuous.

Pain is very subjective, and it changes from patient to patient. The majority require regular pain killers for the first four or five days.

Then, after four or five days most patients are relatively pain-free, moving comfortably, and not requiring any further analgesia. The implants often sit high, and it takes time for them to settle into a more natural position.

This process takes around six months. It is usually recommended that patients take a week off work and four or five weeks before returning to strenuous exercise like lifting weights, running, and swimming.

Does Breast Augmentation need to be redone?

Usually, patients have to expect to have another operation at some stage in their life.

However, if there are no issues with the implants and the patient is pleased with the shape of the breasts, then there is no need for revision or to have the surgery redone.

About 15 to 20% of patients will have a revision procedure within 10 to 15 years.

The most common reason for this is scar tissue around the implant, which can deform the breast shape and make it hard.

That is called capsular contracture. Another but a less common reason is that the implant may rupture.

Some other times patients want a change in the size of their implant or a further breast reshaping procedure such as a lift.

What Are the Benefits of a Breast Augmentation?

If you are struggling with asymmetrical breasts, breast augmentation surgery will help correct their appearance to make them more even in terms of volume and looks.

This procedure helps ensure your clothes fit better, especially bras, which can be hard to shop for and wear when dealing with incredibly asymmetrical breasts.

An additional benefit of this surgery is that it will help make your breasts aesthetically pleasing to help build your self-esteem.

Another primary reason women seek breast augmentation surgery is to aid in the restoration of their breasts. Several factors can affect the look and feel of the breasts.

Aging and pregnancy are two of those most significant factors. As we age, our bodies change, and for many women, they deal with their breasts beginning to sag.

Also, for pregnant or nursing mothers, you can see a depletion in breast volume due to nursing and hormones. Breast augmentations are a way to restore your breast’s appearance and receive fuller, more youthful breasts.

Women struggle with their body images for a wide variety of reasons. Breast augmentations give women who are unhappy with their breasts a chance to change them and increase their self-confidence.

Brief History of Breast Augmentation

Have you ever wondered the who, what, when, where, and why of breast augmentation? We know it’s a topic on everyone’s mind so we are here to answer a few of your questions with a brief look at some interesting information about the history of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in the United States: breast augmentation surgery.

Early Attempts at Breast Augmentation

In the 1890s, doctors began to inject paraffin into breasts to enhance their size but this was problematic and quickly abandoned because the paraffin leaked into other parts of the body. In the 1920s and 1930s, surgeons began to try and transfer fat from other areas of the body to the breasts, but this didn’t work either as the fat was just reabsorbed into the body. Things got even crazier during the 1950s when surgeons tried to implant a whole host of strange foreign substances into the breasts, including wood, polyurethane, cartilage, sponges, and even glass balls. Thank goodness for women around the world those methods were all rather quickly abandoned too.

Contemporary Breast Enhancement

Breast augmentation surgery, as we know it today, found its origins in the early 1960s. Two doctors, Frank Gerow and Thomas Cronin, invented silicone breast implants and the rest is history. According to the story, Dr. Gerow squeezed a plastic bag filled with blood and commented that it felt remarkably like a woman’s breast. Thus, the idea of silicone breast implants was born.

The very first breast augmentation surgery was performed in Houston, Texas when Timmie Jean Lindsey, a mother of six, received silicone breast implants. Timmie Jean enhanced the size of her breasts from a B cup to a C cup and was beyond thrilled with the results. In hospital for a different procedure, Lindsey was asked if she would like to be the first patient for a new, experimental surgery.

Concerns About the Safety of Silicone

In the 1990s, concerned citizens raised issues about the safety of breast implants’ silicone filling material. They claimed that silicone leaking from breast implants was causing autoimmune diseases. Eventually, the FDA decided to ban the use of silicone breast implants in the United States but this ban does not apply to women undergoing breast reconstruction surgery following breast cancer surgery and for women who have already had silicone implants and needed to have them replaced.

After the FDA ban on silicone implants, there was only one choice of implants that breast enhancement available to patients. Now, surgeons use implants filled with saline, a sterile saltwater solution that the body can safely absorb in case of an implant leak.

It is important to note that for several years, clinical studies about the safety of silicone implants have been conducted and implant manufacturers disproved the theory that silicone causes autoimmune diseases. This resulted in the FDA lifting the ban on silicone implants and they are now available again in the U.S. for breast augmentation patients who are at least 22 years old.

The Future of Breast Augmentation Surgery

The last number of years have seen several advancements in the area of breast augmentation treatment options There has been a new generation of silicone breast implants introduced. These implants are highly cohesive and form-stable silicone implants. These implants are improved by being less viscous than traditional silicone implants. They also have a form-stable filling material that actually stays intact when squeezed, twisted or even when cut in half!

Breast augmentation remains the most popular plastic surgery procedure in the United States. As with any surgery, do your research and make sure your surgeon is a Board- Certified Plastic Surgeon. If in the Miami-Dade area, your surgeon should be a Diplomate of the American Board of Plastic Surgery and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
