Liposuction

The battle of the bulge is a real struggle, and the fight to control stubborn fat deposits have been raging for decades. Aside from the genetically blessed, most of us can’t seem to shake that extra bit of softness, no matter how hard we diet. This is especially true as we age – those pesky pounds that were once easy to shake are now here to stay. There is hope yet; liposuction can come to the rescue.

What is Liposuction?

Traditional liposuction is an invasive, surgical procedure. The specialist makes a small incision near the target area and inserts a long, slender tube to essentially “suck” out excess fat cells through a vacuum (this is not the same as your vacuum cleaner at home).

The belly is the most popular option, but other target areas include the hips, thighs, arms, buttocks – anywhere where stubborn fat tends to accumulate.

There are also some non-invasive liposuction procedures available for those who don’t want to go under the knife. CoolSculpting, for instance, freezes the target fat cells and all but annihilate them. These cells are then naturally expelled.

Benefits of Liposuction

Liposuction offers a relatively quick (albeit pricey) option to get rid of fat deposits. The procedure can resculpt your figure, and give you that needed confidence to show off your body and break out the clothes that you’ve always wanted to wear.

A Word of Caution

As any medical expert will advise, liposuction is not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle. Fat cells tend to simply grow back after a time, so patients will still follow a balanced diet and engage in moderate exercise.

Liposuction also isn’t for everyone. The cost aside, the ideal candidates should have elastic skin to prevent scarring, and not smoke. Smokers are a risk of developing complications, such as blood clots. If you are a smoker, your surgeon will urge you to quit, at least for a couple of weeks leading up to the procedure.

It is also worth considering that there is always some risk involved with surgical procedures. Aside from the expected pain, patients can also experience:

    Excessive bleeding
  • Blood clots
  • Complications for anaesthesia
  • Fluid retention
  • Numbness and shock
  • Bad contouring

It is therefore paramount that you consult with a certified plastic result who specializes in body contouring. A qualified surgeon with good reviews will mitigate any potential complications and leave you feeling confident in your own skin.
