Should You Get a Tummy Tuck?

People around the world have a desire to have a more cinched in waist. Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) is one of the most common procedures done around the world and is estimated and the sixth most common procedure that people, men and women, opt for. There are different types of tummy tuck procedures that are done for different result, but they all focus on the abdominal area. From pregnancy to significant weight loss, people go in for an abdominoplasty to lose excess skin and thin out the waist.

What Is a Tummy Tuck?

Abdominoplasty, or more commonly referred to as a tummy tuck, is the surgical procedure in which excess skin (and in some types of procedures excess fat) is removed. In most procedures, the abdominal wall is also tightened and muscles that may have been separated are restored to give a firmer look and feel. There are different types of procedures that can be done depending on the patients’ needs and wants. Some tummy tuck procedures offer liposuction along with the surgery, but a standard tummy tuck does not offer it.

What Are Some Reasons People Get a Tummy Tuck?

As people age, lose weight, or go through a pregnancy, their skin around their abdomen will become loose and oftentimes there is extra skin. Typically, in these kinds of situations, it is extremely difficult (and for some near impossible) to lose any skin procured during times of being overweight or pregnant. Because of this, people choose to have it surgically removed. Even though this is a procedure where the excess skin is simply cut off and lifted, it cannot be labeled as the easier route seeing as it will take just as much work to heal from the surgery and maintain the look.

Weight loss is one of the main reasons a man or woman goes in to get an abdominoplasty. When a person decides to make a lifestyle change for the better and loses weight, it is very common, especially when over 100 pounds have been lost, that there is skin left over. This is because when someone is overweight, the body makes up for the extra mass by creating extra skin. This extra skin is not as easy to lose as the fat (though this process is also difficult). Even if a patient hasn’t gone through sudden or extreme weight loss, weight fluctuations can also cause loose skin.

Women will also develop loose skin around the abdomen after pregnancy. During pregnancy, the waist expands and the skin stretches; even with proper care, women will still experience loose skin postpartum. Typically, after their last pregnancy, women will go in for a “mini” or “standard” tummy tuck.

While we age, our skin naturally gets looser and weaker. The cells in our bodies start to deteriorate more rapidly and our bodies can’t keep up. Since the patient ages range from young to old, don’t consider yourself “too old” for a tummy tuck procedure.

People will oftentimes go in with more than one reason. So, whether you have a lot of extra skin from extreme weight loss or just a small amount from a pregnancy or weight fluctuation, a tummy tuck surgery will help. As with any surgery, make sure you are well researched and speak to a professional surgeon about your options.
