What Is a Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures for women. It aims to improve both the size and shape of the breasts through the insertion of breast implants. During the procedure, a surgeon makes an incision under the breasts where the resulting scar will be hidden by the natural fold of the breast. Often, a patient may opt to have a breast lift performed along with an augmentation for aesthetic purposes. At Beyond Beauty Plastic Surgery we use another form of surgery right under the arm pit to ensure minimal scaring, a procedure we’ve developed with our experienced surgeons.

Are There Any Serious Risks?

This procedure has been perfected over the decades, so the majority of surgeries happen without complications. However, a breast augmentation is still a surgery, so there are some minor general risks you should be aware of, like: minor bleeding, infections, and reactions to anesthesia are complications that can occur with any surgery.

While these types of complications occur in approximately one out of every 100 cases, other complications relating to the implant can occur. Many patients experience nipple numbness for several weeks to several months after the procedure, which is normal. Also, new breast implants tend to sit high on the chest but are expected to “settle” into a more natural position as the body recovers from the surgery. This process is called “fluff and drop,” and it can take up to six months for the breasts to reach a natural position.

In a few small cases, the implants can rupture or cause internal scarring. The implants used today are generally safer and more advanced than ones used in the past, so this type of complication is quite rare.
